Nearshoring a molded product to Mexico: what must move besides the tool?

A transfer is an engineering program

Moving a mold does not automatically transfer a stable production process. A successful nearshoring program must preserve the knowledge that made the existing process work while correcting the weaknesses that motivated the move.

Tool condition, machine compatibility, material sourcing, process windows, inspection methods, approved samples and maintenance history should be reviewed before the production bridge is set.

Build the bridge before interrupting supply

The transfer plan should establish who owns each technical and commercial decision, how much bridge inventory is required and what evidence will authorize the new source to ship.

  • Confirm tooling ownership, condition, documentation and required repairs.
  • Match press size, controls, auxiliaries, material handling and automation requirements.
  • Recreate approved materials, specifications, gauges, control plans and validation evidence.
  • Define pilot runs, dimensional review, capability expectations and customer approval gates.
  • Protect supply with realistic inventory, logistics and contingency planning.
