Tie-bar clearance is only the first gate. A defensible transfer screen also checks mold height, opening, weight, shot utilization, clamp demand and machine interfaces.
A mold that fits between the tie bars may still be the wrong press
Tool transfers fail when physical fit is treated as production feasibility. The mold can pass between the tie bars and still exceed platen support, mold-height range, opening stroke, injection-unit capacity, clamp demand or required interfaces.
A useful preliminary screen keeps every check separate. A failed gate is visible, missing information remains unknown, and a positive screen never replaces a mold inspection, tool-book review, material confirmation, process trial or customer approval.
Seven machine-fit gates to check
The inputs do not need to be perfect to begin, but assumptions should never be presented as measured facts.
- Tie-bar clearance in both directions, including handling and installation clearance.
- Platen dimensions, support, locating ring, bolt pattern and nozzle interface.
- Minimum and maximum mold height, machine daylight and required part-removal opening.
- Mold weight, crane capacity and the machine manufacturer's permitted tooling load.
- Total shot weight and volume for every cavity, runner and material density, with a stable process cushion.
- Estimated clamp demand from projected area and expected cavity pressure, with operating margin.
- Hot-runner controls, hydraulic or pneumatic cores, cooling, ejector, robot and other auxiliary requirements.
Shot capacity needs a process window, not a yes-or-no comparison
The total shot includes the molded parts, every cavity and the runner system. Converting weight to volume also depends on the actual material density. A machine with a nominal shot larger than the part is not automatically a good match: very low utilization can create residence-time or control concerns, while very high utilization can leave too little process cushion.
Vulcan's preliminary screen therefore flags missing density or shot data and treats utilization as an engineering range. The production decision still requires the actual machine injection unit, resin, screw and process window.
Clamp demand is also an estimate until the process is known
Projected area and cavity pressure can support an early clamp-force estimate. The calculation should include every cavity and runner area exposed to pressure, plus a safety margin. Material, geometry, gate location and filling pattern can materially change the result.
For that reason, a digital prescreen should identify likely fit, conditional fit or no recorded fit. It should not issue production approval. The responsible next step is an engineer-led evidence review followed by a controlled trial and validation plan.
